When PNG is the right choice for an AVIF image
AVIF is an image format released by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019 and built on the AV1 video codec. It packs photos and graphics into very small files and supports transparency, which is why image-heavy websites increasingly deliver it. Outside the browser, support is patchier: plenty of image editors, design apps, slide programs and upload forms still won’t accept an .avif file.
You could convert to JPG instead, but PNG is the better target in three situations:
- The image has a transparent background. Logos, icons, stickers and product cut-outs lose their transparency as JPGs. PNG keeps it, including soft, partly transparent edges.
- You plan to edit the image. PNG is lossless, so you can open, change and save it repeatedly without the picture slowly degrading.
- The picture contains sharp text or flat colors. Screenshots, diagrams and illustrations stay crisp in PNG instead of picking up JPG artifacts around their edges.
For ordinary photos without transparency, the AVIF to JPG converter usually makes more sense, since the files come out far smaller.
What happens when you convert AVIF to PNG
The tool hands each file to your browser’s built-in AVIF decoder, draws the result and saves it as a PNG, all on your own device. Nothing is uploaded. Because PNG is lossless, this step adds no new compression, but expect a much bigger file: AVIF’s compression is far more aggressive than PNG’s. Each result shows the dimensions, the new file size and how it compares with the original, so you can see the difference before you download.
If a file won’t open, your browser is probably too old to read AVIF. Current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox can, as can Safari 16.4 and later.
