Instagram image sizes
All five presets are 1080 pixels wide, the width most commonly recommended for Instagram images. Pick the one that matches what you’re posting:
| Preset | Size in pixels | Aspect ratio | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Product shots, graphics, quotes |
| Portrait post (default) | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | Most photos, especially of people |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | Tall photos; matches the profile grid preview |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | Wide scenes and group shots |
| Story or Reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical images |
Your profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 preview, so square, 4:5 and landscape posts lose part of their sides there. Whatever size you choose, keep the important part of the picture near the center.
Fill frame or fit whole image?
Fill frame scales the photo until it covers the whole frame, then crops whatever sticks out, keeping the center. You get no borders, but you lose the edges: a typical landscape photo resized to the 4:5 portrait size loses 40 to 50 percent of its width. Use it when your subject sits in the middle of the shot.
Fit whole image shrinks the photo so all of it fits inside the frame, then fills the empty space around it. You can choose:
- Blurred (the default): a blurred, slightly darkened copy of the same photo, which blends in with its colors.
- White: a clean, gallery-style border.
- Black: works well for night shots and dark images.
Fit whole image is the better choice for wide group photos, screenshots, artwork, and anything with text close to the edges.
Tips for sharp results
- Start from the original photo rather than a screenshot or a copy sent through a messaging app, which is often smaller and more compressed.
- Every result is saved as a JPG at quality 92, which keeps detail while holding the file to a reasonable size. Each result shows its dimensions and file size, so you can check it before downloading.
- Formats such as WebP, AVIF, PNG and SVG are accepted directly, so there’s no need to convert an image before resizing it.
- To post a panorama as a swipeable carousel, or a picture spread across a 3 × 3 profile grid, cut it into pieces with the image splitter instead.
